Energy Justice Monologue

By Samuel Atchison

Energy

the lifeblood of society

But the way energy is treated

Is with basic impropriety

How can we expect to enjoy the fruits of our land?

When profit over profit is the only plan

We don’t have much time so do what you can

Were poisoning the water, the plants, the fauna

All so companies can make another dolla

And why is it the people that don’t receive the fruits

That has all the most risk

Is that our life liberty and pursuit of happiness

Because with this world now I’m starting to get pissed

First with life

A right that we all deserve

But is my life fully lived

when my water tastes burned

What about the air in my lungs

That is not filling my chest

The toxins in the air

Ripping away my breath

wait

But let’s not worry about breathing

I’m feeling nauseous

Is that radiation I’m feeling

I sit in my home feeling safe in a lie

While my own cells start to wither and die

I just pray the cancer ones don’t start to divide

Is this really a life I’m living of mine

Because as much as living is everyone’s right

If you are rich life seems to take less of a bite

Now stop for a second

What shit is this

That your monetary value will delay deaths kiss

Because how is that fair to the mother of three

To work three jobs and still live in poverty

And don’t forget the low-income housing

The way the neighborhood are placed

My suspicions arousing

The amount of cancer and asthma is simply astounding

Now as much as I can go on and on

Enough about life

To liberty, let’s move on

Liberty

A three-syllable word that is so close to our hearts

Of American values, it is truly a part

Liberty the freedom to do anything

But here, and now what does it mean

Because I have the liberty to do a lot with my life

But wait

I’m straight, a male, and I’m white

Well what does that have to do with my liberty

Sadly in this world, I think it means most everything

Because I can work my hardest and get very far

But the less pigment in my skin seems to be a racecar

Where the opposite keeps others from even meeting the bar

Is the game really rigged because I’m keeping on par

And for some reason this gilt

Is just building into my chest

Every human should be equal

I think thats whats best

Cause I want the liberty

Equal justice for all

But is this systematic cracks our society’s fall?

 I’m scared for the world

Cant you see

That I’m starting to think liberty is just a belief

Cause our government is failing

The world is falling down

Is just seems like everything going to the ground

And then I see hope

hope in my fellow man

I see them trying to fix the problems

That we don’t fully understand

I see more every day standing up for all rights

And I think to my self

That this will be alright

Because more than hate

Love and passion fits

and I think this is all from

Our pursuit of happiness

Most peoples happiness

Comes from loving and love of others

Whether a friend, stranger, sister or brother

I wish our happiness could align with all others

Because then I think the world would finally come together

If we can all pursue our happiness as one

An unimaginable utopia will arise like the sun

And with the breaking of dawn on every single day

This is the place that justice is meant to stay!

So let’s please all see that equality is key

Let’s all treat each other like one family

And let’s all live happiness, life, and liberty
